Method: a method is a procedure agreed on by participants of a discussion or research project. In the case of violations of a method, the comparability of the results is in particular questioned, since these no longer come from a set with uniformly defined properties of the elements._____________Annotation: The above characterizations of concepts are neither definitions nor exhausting presentations of problems related to them. Cognitive Psychology on Method - Dictionary of Arguments
Corr I 401 Method/Cognitive Psychology/Matthews: Studies of personality and performance offer some unique methodological challenges (Robinson 2007)(1). The simplest designs simply correlate a given trait with a given performance index, as we might, for example, test whether Extraversion correlates with simple reaction time. But cognitive psychology derives much of its power as an investigative approach through systematically manipulating task factors to uncover fundamental processing mechanisms. Thus, demonstrations that associations between personality and performance are moderated by task parameters are more informative than simple correlational data. For example, example, studies that show that the detrimental effects of anxiety on performance increase with the memory load of the task (cf., Eysenck 1992)(2) link anxiety specifically to the cognitive processes supporting working memory. Personality psychologists must also address a basic difficulty inherent in cognitive research: that different models may explain the data equally well (the ‘identifiability problem’). >Models/Cognitive Psychology. Thus, to link traits to specific processing mechanisms, it is essential both to have a good theory of the process of interest and to choose carefully task manipulations that will expose individual differences in the process of interest. 1.
